In this satsang, Nutan Swamiji discusses the famous Upanishadic illustration of two identical birds perched on a tree, representing our egoistic identity and our real universal identity.

Swamiji says, when the Upanishad declares 'Everything is Brahman', it is only to highlight the illusoriness of the world. All the differences perceived by us, the infinite variety in the world, is only an appearance, a non-truth. The Truth is the substratum, the Brahman on which all this appears. A knower of Truth will see the world and even function in it, but he will not get trapped by any attraction or affliction, because he has transformed his ordinary vision into a Knowledge vision.

The lower bird moving around the tree, tasting one fruit after the other, is just like us playing in this world in pursuit of happiness. In the process, it eats bitter and even poisonous fruits and suffers. It notices its close friend, sitting on top of the tree not eating and yet sitting gracefully and contented. It proceeds to meet the friend, but sees new fruits and gets attracted to them, forgetting the friend. This goes on countless times, until finally one day the lower bird goes to the top and finds out that there are no two birds. It was a creation of delusion; the top bird is my own real identity!

Swamiji says, our real identity is quietly waiting for us, confident that one day we will no longer be attracted to this world and return to his lap. When we really come back, we will instantly get the bliss of Atma and will outlive all grief.
