In this Satsang based on Ishopanishad, Swamiji says that just listening to the talk on the Upanishad is not enough. To fully understand the purport of the Upanishads, a seeker will have to go into the deeper meaning of all the words. A dedicated period of self-study is called for.
The first two verses of the Upanishad convey the essence of the instructions of the Upanishad. To have a fulfilling life, one has to know that the whole world is only an appearance on the Lord, Isha or Brahman. If one understands this truth, then he will perform all activities without being affected or bound by it. Even if one has a long lifespan, one will live and act joyously with the understanding that the whole world is covered by the Atma (one’s own real identity). The Upanishad points out that it is not enough to know the Isha in the state of Samadhi (non-interactive state) alone. Even in the interactive state one has to know that the whole world is covered by That.
We feel that we are the constricted, small identity separate from others. But when we Realize that the same Atma is pervaded everywhere and in all beings, there is that One alone, there is no question of having hatred, intolerance or grief. Having said that the seeker has to see “Ishaavaasyam idam sarvam”, the Upanishad tries to describe the indescribable Consciousness, Brahman. It says that the Atma is all-pervading, brilliant and pure, formless and is untouched by sin or virtue. Everything that is perceived is an expression of the Atma.
Swamiji exhorts the seeker to remember that the Atma cannot be known as anything different from oneself. It has to be known as one’s own Self.
Shlokas chanted in the talk:
1) Ishopanishad--1 to 8
2) Kathopanishad--1.2.21 and 2.1.5
3) Chandogya Upanishad - 7.26.2
