Lecture by Nutan Swamiji based on Chapter 14 of Bhagavad Gita during Shadhana Shibiram in Society for Inner Resources Development, Malaysia on 21 January 2023.
In this talk, Swamiji explains that nature and also the human personality (which is part of nature) is made of the three Gunas--Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Through this Triguna model, we can understand how the gunas work in our personality and how they cause bondage. We also understand how we can overcome the bondage created by the gunas.
Discussing Sattva guna bondage, Swamiji explains that Sattva guna binds one by causing clinging to happiness and knowledge. He connects to verses from the 18 th chapter where Sri Krishna defines Sattvika Jnana (knowledge) as one where one perceives the One, imperishable and undivided Consciousness in all beings. It is the vision of oneness and unity in diversity. It leads to a comprehensive vision, dissolves preferential clinging and enhances Viveka (discrimination). Sattvika Sukha (Happiness) is had when the mind and intelligence are in touch with the inner Presence—the Self. But the craving for this sukha is also a bondage.
So, Sattva Guna binds one with clinging to knowledge and happiness. To overcome the Sattva guna bondage, one must anchor the intelligence in the all-embracing soul. Such a one remains unaffected by the effects of the gunas and transcends them. A person who has transcended gunas has identified with the Self.
Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Isa Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
