Ma emphasizes that, along with his Sadhana, a seeker must cultivate the qualities or virtues which will calm the mind. Discussing the qualities presented in the Nimi-Navayogi conversation in Srimad Bhagavatam, she says that unless a seeker cultivates noble qualities, his mind will be restless and he will not be able to receive and retain the instructions of the Guru.
Discussing the quality of straightforwardness, Ma reads out passages from Prabhata Rashmih (Poojya Swamiji’s short messages) and says that even if a spiritual aspirant is not able to cultivate qualities to the desired extent, he must be earnest in his seeking. It is easy to absorb and assimilate any quality, provided one loves the quality.
Ahimsa--non-hurtingness through mind, speech and body-- is a vital quality for a seeker of Truth. How to practice Ahimsa? One can think that the same Self or God is in every being on earth. Thinking in this manner, one can consider everyone as one’s own and not hurt anyone.
A seeker must make it a practice to remain calm and equal to all the pairs of opposites (happiness & misery, loss & gain, likes & dislikes etc). Thinking that Brahman is Sama (equal), one must practice unaffectedness and equalness in every situation. If one practices Samatva in all thoughts, speech and action, one will reach the Sama state which is the quality of Brahman. A sincere seeker has to constantly assess whether virtues are adorning his personality more and more.
