This talk is the second in a series of talks given by Nutan Swamiji during the Enlightened Living Retreat at Jamshedpur in 2019. In this talk, Swamiji elucidates the greatness as well as uniqueness of scriptural tradition of our land.
Chanting and explaining the Shanti Mantra of Kathopanishad (Om Saha naa vavatu…), Swamiji explains that Shanti Mantras are self-addressed prayers. They are addressed to our own mind. Shanti Mantras are chanted before every Upanishadic study, to make the mind focussed and to create a sublime atmosphere for the study of the Upanishad.
Swamiji proceeds to analyze the Shanti Mantra in detail, where the student prays for protection and nourishment of both his teacher and himself. The disciple prays that whatever is done by him and his teacher, should be imbued with courage, spirit and inspiration. The seeker’s mind prays that whatever is studied, it should all become powerful and brilliant. Most importantly, he prays that there should be no intolerance between
himself and his teacher.
A human being has three kinds of suffering in life—1) Aadhi Daivika—one caused by natural calamities 2) Aadhi Bhoutika—Suffering caused by other beings 3) Aadhyaatmika-suffering caused by one’s own body, mind and intelligence. In the end of the Shanti Mantra, the disciple prays that he is free from all these three kinds of suffering so that he can focus on the Upanishadic study.
Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
