How To Remove Sinful Tendencies
Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha
In this audio, Swamiji tells us that every being at the time of birth is gripped by delusion, making him dance between the pairs of opposites- good/bad, right/wrong, pleasure/pain, swarga/naraka and many more. The root of these pairs lies in one’s own mind. The mind produces iccha/dvesha- likes and hatred. By dividing ourselves into this, we get into delusion and a serious bondage.
In human life, there is an equal amount of paapa and Punya. We need to attenuate the paapa, the sin. The way is to do more Punya karmas and reduce paapa, make them extinct. Then we can worship God with exhilaration and unbrokenness.
Everything good, noble, useful and great is a Punya karma. Yajna, Dana and tapas are three holy acts which help to reduce paapa. Whatever we do as an offering to God becomes holy. Whatever wealth we have, we must place it at the disposal of others. It becomes a dana when we give to people unrelated to us. Tapas means taking up an austerity, like fasting, reading spiritual texts and observing Mauna.
These three Punya karmas alone can make our sinfulness attenuate and make our mind pure. The pure mind will think of God, be devoted to him and this will make us peaceful, delightful and fulfilled.
