Ma’s Satsang is based on the Vivekachudamani (the crest jewel of discrimination). She urges all seekers to learn some of the verses which are relevant for their spiritual practice, introspect on the meaning and make it a part of their daily life.
Vivekachudamani is believed to be the last composition of Adi Shankaracharya. Ma recounts the eventful and inspiring life story of Adi Shankaracharya, whose life was one of austerity and renunciation. Answering the call of renunciation (Sannyasa), he left his widowed mother and sought a Guru who would guide him in the spiritual path.
He found his Guru Govindapada in a cave in the banks of the river Narmada. After spending time learning and practicing under his Guru, he was instructed to spread the Brahma Vidya knowledge all over India. So, he undertook the arduous task of spreading the message of Sanatana Dharma. Engaging in debates and discussions with scholars following various schools of thought, Shankaracharya re-established Advaita Vedanta in the hearts and minds of people. During his travels (Parivrajana), some devoted and sincere seekers became his disciples and joined him in his mission.
Vivekachudamani is a conversation between a knower teacher and a seeker student. The seeker approaches the Guru humbly and says that the world is perishable, changeful and is the cause of intense misery. He enquires about the One, permanent, source of peace and happiness. The Guru teaches the disciple step-by-step about the real nature of the world and the Self (one’s own real identity).
He begins by saying that there are three things which are very rare in the world and are attained only by the grace of God—1) Human birth 2) Intense yearning to be freed from the shackles of the mind and intelligence. 3) The close association of a Maha Purusha (a Knower). Having been blessed with a human life and also having some knowledge of the scriptures, one who does not seek liberation verily commits suicide, for he kills himself by clinging to things which are unreal.
