Gurupoornima Retreat 2024 - Discourse based on Vivekachudamani followed by Q/A
#nutanswamiji #enlightenedliving #vivekachudamani
In this series of talks, Swamiji discusses ten shlokas from Adi Shankaracharya’s Vivekachudamani. All the ten shlokas end with ‘ब्रह्म तत्त्वमसि भावयात्मनि’, where the Guru says that the shishya must contemplate with the bhava (emotion) in his mind that ‘I am Brahman’. All the ten verses give a hint about how one can contemplate upon the Brahman.
The great Rishis of yore embarked upon the enquiry to find out ‘Who am I’ and this led them to the discovery of the real ‘I’ (the real identity). They discovered that the ‘I’ is not different for different body-mind personalities. The whole universe appears in that ‘I’. This discovery of the Rishis was passed on to the subsequent generations and was confirmed by seekers and enquirers from era to era.
When one identifies with the real identity, all the knots of the heart are broken, all the doubts of the intelligence are dissolved and one will not have a sense of doership anymore. In this Supreme state, the emotional, intelligential aspects of the personality become free and the doership is dissolved and one becomes fulfilled.
Swamiji speaks about the four cardinal Mahavaakyas which are the revelation of the discovery of the Rishis. The Guru tells the pupil ‘Tat Tvam Asi’ (You are That). When the shishya attains the Truth, he declares: ‘Aham Brahmaasmi’ (I am Brahman, which is the substratum of the whole creation). A knower also declares ‘Prajnanam Brahma’ (The Ultimate substratum on which the whole universe is appearing is Knowledge). He also discovers that ‘Ayam Atma Brahma’ (This Atma is the Ultimate Brahman).
