Gurupoornima Retreat 2024 - Discourse based on Vivekachudamani followed by Q/A

#nutanswamiji #enlightenedliving #vivekachudamani

In these series of talks, Swamiji discusses the ten shlokas from Vivekachudamani which try to describe the Consciousness in various ways. The scriptures describe it but it is for a seeker to perceive and realize it in his own purified and subtle buddhi. It is not knowing anything external or different from oneself, it is knowing one’s own real identity.

In the Supreme Consciousness there is no birth, growth, change, decay, disease or death. It is the Subject revealer is unchanging, imperishable and eternal. It is changeless and all the changeful things do not affect it; it is only the witness of all the changes. It is the substratum of the whole universe which supports the creation, subsistence and destruction of the universe.

In the Consciousness, our real identity, there is no bheda at all. How can it be identified? It is identified by the characteristic that it never sets or is absent. It is ever-present. It is the sentient ocean which is ever-free because there is no second entity to bind it. It is the formless, indivisible sentience.

The Consciousness is transcendental, creates the infinite variety of the universe. It is the non-dual cause of the universe which is not created by anything else. It is Absolute which does not have any other cause.

Swamiji elaborates that in the Consciousness there is no duality, limit, change or decay. It transcends the changeful world (Kshara) and unchanging ‘I’ within (Akshara). The scriptures try to take us to the subtle level by indicating that the consciousness is beyond the changeful and unchanging. It is indescribable.

The Guru tells the Shishya: Contemplate with the bhava (emotion) in the mind that ‘I am Brahman’.
