In this Satsang, Ma discusses placidity or calmness of mind, which is inevitable in the Spiritual pursuit. When a seeker makes a practice of not allowing the objective world to affect or disturb him, his mind becomes calm and cheerful. If we want liberation from the shackles of the mind, then we should be introspective to see that we do not indulge in unnecessary thoughts, plans, and imaginations.

Shankaracharya’s composition ‘Sarva Vedanta Siddhanta Sara Sangraha’ says that a discriminating seeker must strive to follow the disciplines of yama and niyama, to make his mind placid. When a seeker has an intense yearning for liberation alone, he must abandon all evil traits of the mind and cultivate all divine and noble qualities. The Sadhaka must make an effort to increase sattva guna more and more.

Vivekachudamani says that Sattva is like clear, pure water. But in combination with Rajas and Tamas, it gives place to worldliness. When the Sattva guna is prominent, the Self gets revealed. How to make Sattva guna predominant? The text says that a seeker must cultivate the qualities of a knower-Jnana Lakshanas (enumerated in the 13 th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita), practice the discipline of Yama and Niyama. He must have Sraddha (assiduous application), bhakti (love, faith, and adoration for the Lord/Supreme power), and a burning aspiration to attain the ultimate goal. He must cultivate divine qualities and turn away from all that is asat (unreal).

The Sadhana of self-purification must be given due importance in the life of a seeker. Ma emphasizes that this Sadhana is indispensable. Sadhana will be wholesome only when, apart from having an understanding of the Self, one purifies the mind.
