196 – What Bhagavad Gita Wants us to Do | Part 1 I Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

1456 Views | 1 month ago

Based on Bhagavad Gita, this talk was held on 01 July 2018, at Gita Ashram, Petaling Jaya during Malaysia Jnana Yajna 2018.

In this talk, Swamiji emphasizes that Bhagavad Gita is not a religious text. The Bhagavad Gita gospel was delivered by Sri Krishna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, just before the commencement of war.

There are two epics—the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Ramayana is a biography of the righteous and illustrious Sri Rama, the prince and king of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Normally, people consider Ramayana to be a religious text, build temples and worship Sri Rama. The intention of Valmiki in portraying the life of Rama was to portray the life of an ideal, model human being, whose virtues can be emulated by people in every generation.

Mahabharata (a historic narrative) was created by Veda Vyasa, where he speaks about the decline and fall of the Kuru dynasty. Mahabharata depicts the complexity of the world, complexity of human life and the art and process of meeting this complexity with poise and harmony.

Bhagavad Gita, a part of Mahabharata, has been preserved by Indian hearts for generations. It is a song of human life, our problems, and solutions for those problems. Swamiji highlights the fact that the Bhagavad Gita gospel was delivered in the battlefield by Sri Krishna to the enfeebled Arjuna, to empower him to stand up and fight. It is not a religious gospel. If it was a religious, or a philosophical gospel, Sri Krishna would have delivered it to Arjuna during his twelve years of forest exile, where the Pandavas were living a life of austerity.
