Discussing the concluding verse (5.29) of the fifth chapter of Bhagavad Gita, Swamiji speaks about the instructions of Sri Krishna, given from the transcendental position of the universal consciousness. He is speaking from the position of the Self, which is activating and enlivening the bodies of all living beings. Although Krishna was a human being, in the mento-intellectual plane he had a far superior magnitude and potential.
Arjuna sought to know about the glories of the all-pervading Self. He wanted to know how the inner self manifests as the variegated universe (10.16). In reply to Arjuna’s wish, Sri Krishna lists the infinite glories of the Supreme (10.20-10.38). He gives examples of various creatures, inert things and materials, celestial beings, mobile and immobile creations, and says that whatever is glorious, resourceful, and powerful and supreme—everything is the Self, the ‘I’ alone. Everything is born out of the brilliance and splendour of the Self.
Speaking from the plane of the Self, Krishna speaks about himself (his own real identity) in innumerable ways. Every human being also has this same spiritual inner presence, which has its own indescribable glory. These descriptions by Krishna are true of all human beings. In all human beings, there is the body-different inner presence, sentience which can be realized only by the pursuit of knowledge, and purification of the mind and intelligence. A Jnani, who has realized the self, can speak the same way as Krishna.
Sri Krishna begins the sixth chapter by reiterating that Sannyasa or renunciation is not disowning things or getting away from the house. Renunciation is not abandoning either religious or secular activities. Whoever does all necessary activities, without depending upon the objective results of actions (depending on the resultant sukha), is a sannyasi and a Yogi. This yoga is a practice which is applicable only in the inner, experiential level. Swamiji emphasizes that it is nothing but the sublimation and evenizing of the mind in and through all actions and interactions.
