In this Satsang, Swamiji elaborates on the 11th Anuvaka of Taittiriya Upanishad, where the Guru (teacher) is giving some instructions to the students who are leaving the Gurukula. This parting message is for the students to follow in life, so that their life would be auspicious and meaningful. These messages are as relevant to a seeker today, as it would have been thousands of years ago.
These short, concise instructions may seem common and familiar, but when introspected upon deeply, they are capable of inspiring, enlightening a seeker and transforming his life. Through these concise messages, the Upanishad is trying to inspire a feeling of unity, oneness, expansion in the minds of all.
The students are now ready to embark on a household life. Once they begin earning money, they must remember the role of their Guru in their lives and offer whatever is required or liked by the Guru, as a token of gratitude. The Guru urges them never to stray from the path of truth and dharma. Whatever they do, it must be free of selfishness, personal desires, raga-dvesha, constriction etc. They must ensure the continuation of their lineage and they must not be inattentive to prosperity and their possessions. Most importantly, the student must never be negligent in studying scriptures, introspecting on them, and applying the messages in his own life.
The Guru enjoins the disciples to always honour and respect Devas (natural powers), the ancestors, parents, the teacher, and guests. The teacher asks the students to avoid actions and behaviour which are not good or auspicious, but follow only those which are auspicious, blemish-free, and good. The students are instructed to associate with good, scholarly, knowledgeable people. If there are doubts or conflicts in the mind, he should take advice from them and follow their suggestions.
He must be careful, and attentive in the matter of gifting of materials to others. Any gifting must be done with Shraddha (giving it supreme value) and having respect for the recipient. The gift must be given according to one’s own capability, in a dignified, graceful, and sensitive manner, with sufficient care, attention and humility. The giver must have a wholesome understanding of the situation—the need of the recipient, the occasion and time, one’s own capability, the materials to be given, whether it would be useful etc.
