In this talk, Swamiji discusses Yogavasishtha Ramayana which tells us explicitly that the mind is an expression of the self. It is this mind that has to be tackled. Besides the mind, there is no other faculty a seeker has to focus his attention during the sadhana.
Mind has a number of traits likes- dislikes, preference-prejudices, acceptance-rejection, desire-hatred, which only cause us distress. The mind has great potential. Atma has to be known and accessed by the mind itself. A seeker has to introduce desirable qualities in the mind. When the mind has the noble qualities, it gets transformed.
Yoga Vasistha repeatedly stresses that one must be uniform with one’s own mind expressions. One must not prefer anything unduly, as a result of which one will dislike some other things. One must make the mind even and uniform in its responses, try to make it flexible and soft. So, one must treat the mind with a kind of universal evenness and fondness, treat it with a habit of tolerating, understanding and forbearing inputs from the world. If the mind becomes thinner, flexible, purer more and more sublime, one will start finding a contentment, fulfilment. The mind should be like an ocean which can withstand any waviness on the surface.
By truthful introspection, the mind can have poise, flexibility, expansion, depth, loftiness, a sense of affluence and sufficiency. Mental affluence makes one the richest man in the world. One can directly make the mind affluent, resourceful and sufficient.
