Swamiji speaks about the Vedic mantras. Vedic sacrifices are done uttering mantras which are powerful expressions of sound and have gained power through being practiced for thousands of years. A mantra loses power if disciples don’t practice them and thus harm the whole culture by ignoring the Guru’s instructions. We may not understand the real power of the mantra initially, but with complete faith and practice, it becomes alive and we become mantradrashta.
Ordinarily we take refuge in property, family etc., but the supreme refuge is atma – our true identity. The Guru who gives the mantra can be understood only when we acquire some of his qualities.
Seekers of truth needn’t practice anything that cannot be experienced and atma is the only thing that can be experienced. Though the promises of heaven/hell in the Vedic mantras aren’t directly perceptible, yet have significance in bridling and making the divergent mind one pointed. So a person devoted to Shiva will think of Shiva during worship and at least for that period his mind becomes filled with Shiva.
