How to Deal with Your Mind

Our interactions in the world are through the senses with objects, people and situations. Whenever the mind feels discomfort tension or stress, that has to be treated properly. All torments or afflictions are impurities. When the mind becomes pure, it becomes very light, subtle, flexible and assimilative.

The mind can be dealt with internally, says Swamiji. It is the same mind that is the source of strength and weakness, good and bad, elevation and enervation. Our mind can create good and bad thoughts. We must understand that we have no control in the mind’s thinking but can understand the laws and sequences of mental function and adopt a better line of thinking.

We must allow the mind to think. If the thoughts are bad, we must recognize that and also understand that we must not follow the bad thoughts through, which come and go. Emergence of bad thoughts cannot be avoided but implementing them can be. Our mind afflicts us, makes us suffer. We must not get afflicted by the memories. By enlightened thinking, we must let the thoughts go or remain, make them powerless. This is the one sadhana we should do throughout the day. By this our mind will become pure and beautiful and give rise to only pure and benevolent thoughts. Everything else will cease to bother us.
