Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha
Swamiji says that the devotional and wisdom practice merge and support each other.
Devotion develops the idea of total reconciliation and acceptance. Through devotion we wish to influence and set right the mind, so that it fosters faith and becomes quiet and calm. A devotee only thinks of the Lord’s lotus feet, not bothered by any outcome, fate or plight that may befall him.
Speaking on wisdom, Swamiji tells us that we must be contented by whatever providence brings about in our life. This too is an attitude of the mind which gives us peace and fullness.
Bhakti is a recognition, knowledge that God is present everywhere in everything. He alone is present, and this has to be recognized and cognized. Once we know this, this knowledge will never leave us! Our Bhakti should take us to a stage where whatever be our relationship with God, it is never affected and remains uniform and constant. This is the finale of Bhakti and Jnana. Through Jnana, our knowledge will never falter or slip and eternally remain with us, as it is unrelated to any external factors or circumstances.
A seeker can approach God with an emotion-oriented nature or with a knowledge-oriented nature. The mind represents devotion, and the intelligence represents knowledge. There is no difference between the two at all. Both are extensions of our inner mind and intelligence.
