Regulate the Senses For Spiritual Growth

  • Regulate the Senses For Spiritual Growth

    Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

The entire crux of spirituality is regulating the senses, says Swamiji. This factor is extremely important in the growth, success and fruition in the life of an individual.

The salvation is in the understanding that we all have a body which is a seat for our sensory organs which carry the two-fold forces of Raga-Dvesha (Attraction or Repulsion). These are to be considered as the biggest enemies in our path. The individual has to strive to not succumb and come under their sway. Raga-Dvesha resides at the level of the senses, mind and intelligence.

Swamiji says, unless there is a clear effort on the path of the individual to restrain and regulate the senses, there can be no Spiritual progress or Spiritual purity or fulfilment. This path of restraint and regulation leads to individual and societal welfare.

प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि निग्रहः किं करिष्यति ।।

Bhagavad Gita 3.33

इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ ।
तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ ।।
