Prabhata Rashmih - Austerity and Renunciation

Renunciation of Desires is moksha

Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

  • Renunciation of Desires is moksha

    Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

In Yoga Vasistha Ramayana, Sage Vasistha enlightens, Sri Rama, that desires are the cause of all bondage. We have latent tendencies and desires coiled up in the mind. Moksha is the extinction of all desires.

Swamiji emphasizes that it is possible for the mind to generate contentment by itself. In reality, there is no place or need for desires. Starting with external things, sannyasins renounce lucrative jobs, blood relations, and more importantly, renounce greed, untruthfulness, possessiveness and ego.

How to renounce the desires of the mind? Aspiration or desire for liberation can be cultivated which will replace desires for external objects. After leaving object desires, the desire for knowing the Self also has to be left.

The secret of spiritual wisdom is that a mind free of desires enjoys supreme peace and contentment.

Shlokas chanted in the Track:

बन्धो हि वासनाबन्धो मोक्षः स्याद् वासनाक्षयः ।
वासनां त्वं परित्यज्य मोक्षार्थित्वमपि त्यज ।।
