The Ashta-siddhis and Rising Above Them
Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha
In this Talk, Swamiji describes the eightfold powers / siddhis which give tremendous power to the mind and require one pointed effort for attaining them.
Swamiji cautions that these practices when sincerely practiced definitely make the mind extremely powerful, but they also are the greatest obstacle in the path of Yoga. Sri Krishna alerts that these wonderful powers should be recognized as trappings and knowing their futility, the devotee should rather focus on the All-Pervading, All-Powerful God Presence. Such a Yogi, then becomes divine, having all the Godly attributes like unaffectedness, bliss, unconditional love and so on.
The mind has immense power as compared to the matter / energy world, so it should be used with the right discrimination / viveka in a non-disturbing, non-harming manner. A seeker must evaluate as to how the mind should be used – for gaining powers or to remain blissful, contented and absolutely unconditionally fulfilled, and not fall a prey to imaginary promises like heaven, Vaikuntha etc.
