Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha
By the fortune acquired over a number of lives in the past, when one gets the association with a Knower (satsaṅga), then alone viveka (discrimination) rises having dispelled the darkness of delusion caused by ignorance.
After many births, getting this rare human form which, although transient, is conducive to attain the Ultimate, a wise person should not lose time to strive for the supreme felicity before the body falls. (For,) the body is constantly followed by death, and the sense enjoyments indeed are available all around (to distract man from his ultimate objective).
Somehow having gained the rare human birth and in that too, manhood, what more, an insight into the Scriptures and the goal they set forth, he, who, due to sheer foolishness, does not strive for liberation himself, is a murderer of his Self, for he kills himself by holding on to the things fleeting and trifling.
Daily with rising and setting of the sun, residual life-span gets shortened. Under the heavy burden of manifold activities and affairs, passing of time is not realized. Even seeing birth, old age, disaster and death (all around), no fear is produced (in the mind). The world has become insane, drinking the intoxicating wine of delusion.
What a wonder it is that even when old age frightens like a tigress waiting in front, diseases attack (torment) the body like enemies, life flows out like water from a broken pitcher, people still indulge in practices harmful to oneself !
Every day life is seen reducing and youthfulness decaying. Days that are gone never come back. Time is devourer of the world. Wealth is as fickle as the breaking of the waves of water, and life as transient as lightning. Therefore, you who gives refuge to all, protect me now who has come to you for refuge.
What is the use of this wealth, the horses and elephants, the acquired kingdom? What is the use of son, wife, friend, animals, the house and even the body? O mind, knowing all this to be instantly perishable, and therefore to be kept far away, meditate upon Lord Shiva for attaining your own Self, following the teachings of the Guru.
Whatever guilt has been incurred by me by hands and feet or by speech and body, through activities of other kinds, by means of ears and eyes, or by the mind; be they orderly or disorderly, bear with me for everything done, spoken and thought; O lord Siva, the sea of mercy, O Siva, Mahadeva, Sambho, bear with me surely.
I worship in devotion the magnificent lotus feet of yours. My mind thinks day after day of you. You, the Lord, I betake to in refuge through prayers piously uttered; you alone I beg of in humility, O Vibhu. Grant me, O Sambhu, the sole teacher of the entire world, the benedictory glance of your eyes, the glance noted for its compassion, which is besought even by the denizens of the heaven. With your mind given to me, instruct me on the path leading to lasting contentment.
O Krishna, the unfailing protector, the ocean of supreme kindness, O sure friend of the Pändava brothers; where are you now, where? Come to my rescue. I , mauled cruelly by Suyodhana in this open assembly, am in utter affliction,’ hearing Draupadi cry like this, who rescued her by making the body stay wrapped in interminable dress; He, Lord Narayana, bent always on redeeming the afflicted, is my sole refuge.
O Lord of the Raghus, no other desire do I entertain any time in my heart. You, being the Inner Self of all, know it well. I am speaking the truth. O best of all the Raghus, grant me such devotion which is exclusive and all-engulfing, making my mind rid of desire and all other taints.
O Lord, I have no confidence in dharma, or material wealth, or in enjoying the desired objects. Whatever comes in accordance with my past deeds, let that happen. O Lord, this is my much considered prayer: May I have unwavering devotion to your lotus feet in as many lives to come.
These beloveds are mine; these children are mine; these houses are mine; these cattle are mine. Man is just like a sheep bleating ‘me-‘ ‘me-‘, when caught by the wolf in the form of Time or Death. (‘me’ in Sanskrit means mine, pronounced as “may” like the ‘bleating’ of sheep).
O Mukunda, bending my head low, I beg of you for this, the ultimate object of my heart’s desire – that, by dint of your blessings, let me, in as many births as there will be, remain unforgetful of your feet.
Wherever my further life may be, according to your own choosing, in the heavens above or upon this earth, O destroyer of hell, even at the time of death, it will be my supreme want to think of your two feet, which are like the enchanting lotuses blooming in the sarat season.
O Kṛṣṇa! May my swan-like mind enter the cage of Your lotus feet, today itself. Because, at the time of death, when the throat gets choked with phlegm, wind and bile, how can one remember You !
Worship and praise Govinda, worship and praise Govinda; worship Govinda, O you, of poor wit. When the God of Death is nearing, never indeed, never surely, does protect the indulgence in grammar—the study of sutras like ḍukrnkarane!
May Krishna, the brilliant beam of rays emanating in thousands from the lotus of non-dual awareness, who is the Kalpaka tree, on which grows the creeper of peace, who is the moon that redresses the scorching heat generated by the worldly life, remain constantly the delighter of my heart.
