Sabha Niketan, Vyasa College Road, Paralikad, Wadakkanchery, Thrissur - 680623
The Annual Parama Tattva Sameeksha Satram was held at Sabha Niketan, Paralikad, Wadakkanchey, Thrissur from 20th December 2024 to 29th December 2024.
An Adhyātmika Journey
Rekha Devarajan
Parama-tattva Sameeksha Satram is conducted yearly in Naimisharanyam, Paralikad, a picturesque village near Wadakanchery, Thrissur District. This spiritual convention, verily a jñāna-mahotsava (Knowledge-festivity) serves as a beacon of adhyātmika knowledge, devotion and collective spiritual growth. This year too, the event spanned ten days, from 20th to 29th December 2024. The first and final words of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam ‘Satyam Param Dheemahi’ appeared significant and relevant through this Satram.
Sabha-niketan
Poojya Swamiji’s much-cherished vision to establish a dedicated venue for disseminating spiritual wisdom, bore fruit with the inauguration of the Sabha-niketan building in December 2022. The serene edifice, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of Naimisharanyam, now stands as a vibrant centre for spiritual discourses and gatherings. Over two decades, Naimisharanyam has witnessed a legacy of devotional activities and profound teachings, with Sabha-niketan enhancing its sanctity and scope.
Inauguration, Key Events
Devotional processions from Parlikad and surrounding villages began from 18 December. On the 19th, from Narayanashrama Tapovanam, the procession carried Mataji Sulabha Devi’s revered Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Text, evoking deep devotion and spiritual fervour as it traversed various locales en route to Naimisharanyam via Thrissur.
Satram itself commenced in Sabha-niketan on the morning of 20 December, with the ceremonial hoisting of the Satra-dhvaja, the sacred flag, by Poojya Brahmarshi Devapalanji. A grand chariot procession, an integral part of the tradition, enthralled participants and onlookers alike.
Poojya Swami Aptalokanandaji Maharaj, the head of Vallikkodu Sri Ramakrishna Math, inaugurated the Satram. Following inauguration, Dr. P. V. Vishwanathan Namboodiri released Sampoojya Swami Bhoomananda Tirthaji’s latest Malayalam book, Yuva Manassukalkku (For the Young Minds). In his short address after release, he stated that the book offers profound guidance for the youth and elders alike. Dr. V. Bindu, Principal of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, Pottore, received the first copy. In her short address she emphasized its relevance and practicality for today’s dynamic world.
Spiritual Discourses
Poojya Swamiji, in his benedictory discourse highlighted how ‘Satyam Param Dheemahi’ proclaimed at the beginning and end of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam is a universal statement, upholding Śrīmad Bhāgavatam as a compendium of Supreme Truth. Swamiji also emphasized that Sabha-niketan was envisioned to serve humanity by facilitating knowledge dissemination. Besides the annual Satram, it now hosts Vyasa Prasadam, a monthly satsang held every second Saturday, and Shree Shukiyam, an annual week-long camp organized for children, over the past two years.
Swamiji solemnly announced his saṅkalpa (resolve) to publish the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in a compact book format, complete with translation, and distribute it to every household in Kerala. Additionally, he proposed initiating group study classes on Śrīmad Bhāgavatam for interested individuals, envisioning a stay of one or two years in Naimisharanyam.
Throughout the discourses, Swamiji emphasized that sensory interactions always result in ‘sukha-duḥkha’ alone. By assimilating these, one attains equipoise and Self-seatedness. The effort for this is natural for those endowed with discrimination.
He spoke eloquently on the significance of single-pointed devotion. Denouncing the futility of seeking the omnipresent God outside when divinity resides within, Swamiji expounded the importance of relinquishing notions of ‘I’ and ‘mine’ in the path of bhakti. His logical and compassionate teachings simplified the spiritual effort required for this attainment, making it feel both clear and achievable. During his evening lectures spanning over 4 days, Poojya Swamiji delved into the Yadu-Avadhūta Saṃvāda, recounting Lord Krishna’s advice to Uddhava in Dwaraka. The discourse enlightened the audience about how human intelligence can draw spiritual lessons from Nature and its elements.
For the mid-day talks, Swamiji spoke on Pañcaratna-ślokas rendered by Uddhava in Vrindavan, evaluating the innocent but unflinching devotion the Vraja women had, towards their Krishna. These discussions offered riveting insights into deriving life lessons from natural phenomena.
Before and after Nāma-saṅkīrtana everyday Swamiji explained one or two verses from Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, which exemplified true lofty devotion. Surcharged with the overpowering devotional rendering from Swamiji, thousands moved in rhythm around the hall, their minds soaked in the knowledge Swamiji bestowed on them.
Poojya Swamiji’s heartfelt discourses, interspersed with affection, loftiness and occasional sternness, deeply moved the audience, leaving a profound spiritual impression.
Nutan Swamiji – “How Supreme Devotion Transcends Liberation” (25th December):
Nutan Swamiji explained that our eternal dharma is based on the four purushārthas – dharma, artha, kāma and moksha. He emphasized that the ancient method of education, the Gurukula system, is aimed at shaping the character of citizens through spiritual classes and training in practical life through close proximity with the Guru.
One must remove the false sense about the Self, by dissolving desires, greed, jealousy, possessiveness and other vices. Individuals confuse their body and mind as the Self and isolate themselves from Nature. As soon as one starts seeing himself as a part of the Universe, feeling of a separate and individualistic ‘I’ disappears and they advance in spirituality.
Śrīmad Bhāgavatam helps and guides us in understanding how one grows from aparā-bhakti to parā-bhakti, ultimate surrender to God. When we come to feel oneness with God, the need to surrender to Him, automatically disappears. Swamiji also explained how even the desire for salvation can become a hindrance to the sadhaka. True liberation is achieved by parā-bhakti, supreme surrender to God.
Ma Gurupriyaji – “True Devotion for Householders to Follow” (27th December):
Ma provided answers to the doubts of householders, who perform all religious and spiritual activities, but subdued by anxiety, fear, addiction, stress and other challenges. Under the influence of three qualities (guṇas) – Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas – they often forget to immerse themselves in the remembrance of God.
Ma shared what Poojya Swamiji, her Guru, told her about true devotional qualities. Swamiji inspired her to learn the meaning of the Bhagavad Gita and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam verses taught by him and to apply them in her life. After contemplating upon, introspecting and practising these teachings, she made them a part of her routine, in addition to managing the administrative and operational matters right from the early days of Ashram life. Ma used ślokas and real-life examples to enlighten us, emphasizing that association with a Knower is a rare fortune and key for spiritual elevation. She also stressed that we should embrace introspection as a tool for spiritual growth, and urged us to draw strength from our śāstras to navigate life’s complexities.
Satram’s Daily Schedule and Activities
During the Satram events, spiritual discourses and cultural programs blended seamlessly. Each day commenced at 4 am with:
Ganapati Homam, Vishnu-sahasranāma Japa, Veda Pārāyaṇa complementing one another setting the sublime tone for a spiritually enriching and enlightening day.
Throughout the day participants were engaged in a variety of activities:
Unique Feature at 23rd Satram
An innovative Sanskrit Śloka Competition, in addition to routine competitions as in previous 2 decades, added a unique dimension to the whole event. Participants submitted their favourite Sanskrit verses, with the top recitations getting awarded on stage by Ma Gurupriyaji. This initiative not only encouraged engagement, but also deepened participants’ connection with sacred texts.
Vishnu-sahasranāma Mahāyajña (VSMY) (29 Dec)
Vishnu-sahasranāma Mahāyajña held on the final day, was the pinnacle of the Satram Vijñāna Mahotsava. Beginning at 8:30 am, the meticulously organized yajña exemplified devotion in action.
Participants, led by Poojya Swamiji, Nutan Swamiji, and Ma, engaged in the ceaseless recitation – a continuous chant of the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. Over four hours, the collective chanting created an atmosphere of unparalleled sanctity, resonating through the hall and elevating the spiritual energy of all present.
Contributions of Dharma-sevakas
The success of the Satram was a testament to the tireless efforts of Dharma-sevakas. They played a pivotal role, ensuring every aspect of the programs including VSMY ran smoothly. From managing flower distribution to maintaining the sacred lamps, their unwavering dedication enhanced the solemnity of the occasion. The fulfilling and inspiring event concluded with a well-coordinated prasada distribution.
Months of meticulous planning at Sabha-niketan culminated in:
Conclusion
The 23rd Parama-tattva Sameeksha Satram was a profound spiritual odyssey. From enriching discourses to the sanctity of Vishnu-sahasranāma Mahāyajña, the event fostered a deep connection with the divine, inspiring attendees to uphold the sacred maxim: ‘Satyam Param Dheemahi’— We contemplate upon the Supreme Truth.
As participants departed, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and anticipation for the next Satram, a testament to the enduring impact of this remarkable spiritual gathering.
Jai Guru!
