Discourses on Vivekachudamani during 48th Annual Delhi Jnana Yajna at CIRD Delhi on 26 March 2024.
Verse 380.
In this Satsang, Swamiji explains verse 380 of Vivekachudamani, analyzing it in great detail and depth. The verse speaks about the inner presence, the Self.
The human body is inert and does not have the power to generate any knowledge or experience. The body is animated and activated by the presence which is within the body. All perceptions and experiences arise only from the mind. The whole magic is wrought by the mind and in the mind.
Shankaracharya says that the Self (denoted by the term ’I’) is a knowledge brilliance. It reveals all external objects, including the body, and also itself. This is the presence by virtue of which we know that we have a body, senses, mind, intelligence and ego. This presence also reveals all thoughts, memories, emotions. This Self-luminous presence reveals everything, but no other factor reveals it.
Out of the 24 hours of the day, we are wakeful for 16 hours. Rest of the time, we are asleep where there is no awareness of the body, mind, intelligence, or the world. The world is present only when we are wakeful. So, the world is a creation of our wakefulness. The same mind wakes up and displays the world and also wipes off the world and puts us to sleep. So, the ‘I’ is the source of everything, the whole creation. When one realizes this, one experiences an abundance, sufficiency, and fullness within.
The ’I’ is the witness of everything. All scriptures emphasize that: “You are the witness of the earth, fire, water, air and space; you are different from all these.” If one is capable of witnessing the entire creation, what is the dimension of the inner personality? Swamiji says that the mind has infinite capacity. It can assimilate all fortunes and misfortunes. By understanding it, one is led to fullness, peace and enrichment.
