Gurupoornima Retreat 2024 - Discourse based on Vivekachudamani followed by Q/A
#nutanswamiji #enlightenedliving #vivekachudamani
In this session, Swamiji discusses the ten verses from Vivekachudamani which speak about Brahman (the Universal Consciousness). Although it is indescribable, the scriptures try to show us how to contemplate on the Ultimate Reality.
The universal Consciousness cannot be associated with any qualities or characteristics. It transcends the moral codes, family lineage and also guna and dosha (good, bad, auspicious and inauspicious). It is beyond name and form. By repeated introspection, a seeker must penetrate into it and make it a first-hand experience. One must understand that all the variegated names and forms are appearances on the substratum (one’s own real identity) and focus on it.
It transcends space, time and all objects. It cannot be attained in the objective ken. The consciousness cannot be known as something different; it can only be known as the Subject, the ‘am’ness in us. A seeker must transcend all the ideas of objective characteristics to know the Consciousness.
It is the Supreme, which transcends everything. It cannot be expressed, attained, or grasped by words and it is not perceivable by the senses (Indriyas). It can be attained only by those whose buddhi has become purified. The Ultimate Truth is Shuddha Chidghanam (the indivisible, unbroken awareness). It is beginningless; it transcends time.
The Guru tells the Shishya: Contemplate with the bhava (emotion) in the mind that ‘I am Brahman’.
