Discourses on Vivekachudamani during 48th Annual Delhi Jnana Yajna at CIRD Delhi on 27 March 2024.
Verse 380.
Poojya Swamiji makes an in-depth analysis of verse 380 of Vivekachudamani, which directly addresses the seeker’s pursuit.
The Self (I) is self-luminous. It reveals the whole creation and it reveals itself too. It is the witness of everything. It is the sheath of Vijnana (knowledge). The mind, intelligence, and ego are the three inner factors of the human personality which spring from the same inner presence-the Consciousness. This Self is the presence which reveals unbrokenly, continuously. The seeker must make this Atma as his sole goal (Lakshya) and pursue it one-pointedly, giving it supreme importance.
This inner presence is the only Sat (real), everything else is Asat (unreal). Everything in the world, including our own body, is changeful. The only changeless presence is the ‘I’ the Self. The seeker must introspect on this unbrokenly; it must be a continuous stream of mental thought. Vivekachudamani says that a seeker must introspect and meditate on the inner presence, with a sense of identity.
Chanting and explaining, Shankaracharya’s Ekashloki, Swamiji says that the Guru slowly leads the disciple to an understanding of the inner presence, which is to be known. The ‘I’ is the source of all knowledge, revelation and experience. The seeker must sit in a secluded place and meditate upon the inner presence which animates and activates the body and is the source of the entire creation.
