In this Satsang, based on the Vivekachudamani, Ma again elaborates on the four-fold qualities that a seeker (Sadhana Chatushtaya) must strive to cultivate. This constant Sadhana will take the seeker closer to his goal. These qualities are symbiotic and must become a regular practice and habit in the life of a seeker.

A seeker must cultivate: Sama (Restraint of the mind), Dama (Restraint of the senses), Titiksha (Forbearance), Uparati (withdrawal from worldliness), Shraddha (Faith in the words of the Guru and the Scriptures), Samadhana (contemplation and absorption in the Self and understanding one’s own real nature).

Having an intense desire for liberation, one must seek a Sadguru who is well-versed in scriptures, who is sinless, desireless, tranquil, peaceful, and established in the Truth. Worshipping such a Guru with devotion, the seeker must do humble and devoted service to him. Having pleased the Guru with his service, he must ask him about the Self.

In Vivekachudamani, the seeker goes to such a Guru and says that he is scorched by the wildfire of worldliness. His mind is constantly fearful about the probable misfortunes that he may have to face. He seeks refuge under the Guru, wanting to be instructed on the path to unaffectedness, peace and fearlessness.

The great, noble Souls (Sadgurus) are peaceful and magnanimous and they work only for the welfare of the society. Having themselves crossed the huge ocean of worldliness, they help others also to do the same, out of love and compassion.
