Swamiji begins this talk discussing the two concepts presented in the Upanishad here--Shreyas (which leads one to auspiciousness) and Preyas (which takes one away from auspiciousness). Giving various relatable and simple examples, Swamiji explains that the choice (between Shreyas and Preyas) is entirely in our hands. The choice has to be made listening to the inner voice of Viveka.
Swamiji discusses the shlokas where Yamaraja praises the qualities of Nachiketa which are extremely essential for any seeker of Truth. He praises Nachiketa’s steadfastness in his seeking, his Vairagya, his resoluteness and his Dhriti (retentivity).
Through these verses one gets an inkling of the greatness and loftiness of the Ultimate Knowledge. One realizes that a seeker has to give Supreme importance to this knowledge and its pursuit in his life.
Shlokas Discussed: (1.2.1 to 1.2.10)
