In response to many requests for further clarification of the Shanti Mantra ‘ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं…’, Swamiji again makes an in-depth analysis of the meaning of the Mantra. He says that ‘Poorna’ means Absolute Transcendental fullness where there is no limitation or duality.
The non-dual, imperceptible, Supreme Brahman is Poorna (full); everything perceived also is Poorna. When we come to know the Consciousness, we understand that the entire creation is an appearance in the Consciousness. When we are able to find the Poornatva in the fragmented world, then there is nothing other than Brahman. Nothing else remains.
Giving it a Sadhana-oriented explanation, Swamiji says that when we discover our real identity, we discover that Atma (the individual Self) and the Brahman (Universal Self) are the same. We discover the Poornatva of the small ‘I’ also. When a Sadhaka discovers the Poornatva of his own being, the whole world becomes Poorna.
But our trouble in life is the divisional outlook (Bheda Buddhi). We cling to the fragmented world and consequently suffer. To remove this suffering, we have to contemplate on the Poorna (Non-dual Consciousness) more and more.
Taking the first two verses of Isha Upanishad, Swamiji explains the meaning of real Tyaga (Renunciation). Tyaga is when we abandon worldliness and Sanga (clinging) to the world. The clinging will reduce when we get anchored in Brahman and then interact with the world. When we do all work thinking that everything in the world is pervaded by the Lord alone, then the work will no longer bind us.
Shlokas discussed in the talk:
