In this global Satsang, Swamiji says that the focus of all scriptures is to take a seeker from gross level to the subtle level and finally to the Universal level. The first segment of the Taittiriya Upanishad (the śīkṣā Valli) deals with the discipline of śīkṣā, which is the science of phonetics and pronunciation. The primary purpose is to start with the science of pronunciation and finally reach the universal tune or rhythm of the Infinite. Through Shabda, Truth was imparted to the disciple by the Guru and the student had to realize it through his own Sadhana.

The Upanishad intricately discusses the science of pronunciation. First one must learn the proper pronunciation of the letters (varnas). Also important is to chant in the proper pitch (Svara)—high, low or the middle pitch. One must also know how much emphasis is to be given to each matra, how much each letter must be elongated. One must be able to give specific emphasis on certain words and produce some letters with force. The speed of chanting is also important. There must be a certain equanimity in the expression of words. It should not be too fast or too slow, it must be well-modulated. In the chanting, integration of all syllables is important.

Through this discipline of chanting, the Upanishad is trying to bring about a discipline and integration in the seeker. Swamiji emphasizes that a seeker may not be able to learn the Upanishadic way of chanting, but he must make an effort to generate the bhava of the Ultimate truth while chanting. One must get immersed in the ultimate state and the sound must be generated from that state.

Swamiji also begins the discussion of the next mantra where the seeker prays that both he and his teacher should be dedicated to the practice and propagation of Brahma Vidya and Truth should radiate from their being and spread everywhere.
