In this Satsang, Swamiji drives home the point that the Upanishad is trying to take our thoughts from the gross to the subtle level. It begins by speaking about Sheeksha (science of pronunciation) which emphasizes that all letters must be pronounced properly, with the right voice modulation, with the right measure of elongation and accent. The whole chanting must be balanced and harmonious, with a proper consistency in flow.

The student prays that both he and his teacher should have fame and brilliance of knowledge. The prayer for fame is so that the Brahma Vidya knowledge is propagated and exposed more and more in the world. The Upanishad then gives some techniques to make the seeker fit to receive the supreme Knowledge, by taking the mind from the selfish level to the universal level. It speaks about the five-fold Maha Samhitas (methods of Meditation). Adhilokam (relating to the earth and other worlds), Adhijyautisham (Relating to all that shine), Adhividyam (Relating to learning), Adhiprajam (Relating to parents and children) and Adhyaatmam (Relating to the body and mind).

Adhilokam: We contemplate on earth as the poorva roopam (first letter) and Heaven as the Uttara Roopam (next letter). The junction (Sandhi) between earth and heaven is Aakasha or space. Vayu or Prana is the sandhanam (the medium which links the two). This is the Adhilokam way of meditation.

Adhijyautisham: When chanting the first letter, one must contemplate on Agni (fire) and the next letter Sun. The junction (Sandhi) is water and the medium which links the two is lightning (sandhanam). This is the Adhijyautisham form of meditation.

Adhividyam: Acharya or teacher is the Poorva Roopam and the resident is the Uttara Roopam (who is the recipient of the knowledge). Knowledge is the sandhi (junction) between the teacher and student and medium which links the two are words (Pravachana). This is the Upasana of Knowledge.

Adhiprajam: Mother is the Poorva Roopam and father the Uttara Roopam. The union of the two, creates progeny (that is the sandhi). The process of procreation is Sandhanam (the medium which creates the link).

Adhyaatmam: Lower jaw is the first form and the upper jaw is the next form. The sandhi is speech and the tongue is the medium which creates the link.

Swamiji emphasizes that the five-fold meditation helps one to move from the gross to the subtle. By using knowledge, one must establish the light of the worlds within one’s own self. Pranava (Om) is the essence of all the five. These cosmic contemplations take the mind beyond trifling preoccupations.

Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Taittiriya Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
