Lecture based on Sreemad Bhagavatham during Jamshedpur Jnana Yajna 2013. This talk was held on 03 March 2013.
In this series of talks, Ma narrates the story of Akrura from Srimad Bhagavatam and explains how a devotee can have divine felicity when he contemplates on God and has love for the Lord. The story shows us how a devotee can pursue devotion and what one should do to be united with the Lord within.
What is the background of Srimad Bhagavatam? Pareekshit was a noble king and a devotee of God. In a moment of anger, he committed the grave mistake of insulting a saint. Unable to bear this, the saint’s son cursed him saying that he would die in seven days, by the bite of a deadly snake. Repenting his action committed in a moment of aberration, the king took this opportunity as a blessing. Renouncing food and drink, he sat in the banks of the Ganga where saints, scholars and others joined him.
Suka deva, the son of Vyasa Deva and a great knower, arrived at the scene. Welcoming the sage with great devotion, Pareekshit asked him what his attitude should be in the face of impending death. Pleased with this question, Suka deva said that if a seeker wants to transcend fear he must hear and sing the Lord’s glories, remember him and contemplate upon him.
Suka Deva, through many anecdotes and narrations, spoke about devotion, devotees and true knowledge. On Pareekshit’s request, he spoke about the life and exploits of Sri Krishna. He spoke about how the all-pervading Lord was born in the form of Sri Krishna. He spoke about the delightful little Krishna growing up in Vraja Bhoomi, how he played and sported like any little mischievous boy, stealing the hearts and minds of all around.
Kamsa (the evil uncle of Krishna), knowing that Krishna was born to kill him, wanted to kill Krishna. When all his evil plots failed, he decided to invite Krishna for a big Dhanuryaga and get him killed in a wrestling match. He decided to send Akrura (his minister) to Vrindavan to invite and bring Krishna and Balarama for the event. Ma speaks about Akrura who was a great devotee of the lord. She speaks about the mental attitude of Akrura when he was sent on this dangerous mission.
