This talk was held during 29 December 2022, as part of 21st Sreemad Bhagavta Tattva Sameesha Satram.
In this Satsang, Swamiji helps us to understand the three gunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas), how they bind us and how we can overcome that bondage, through the gunas.
Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita discuss the three guna model and say that in the entire creation, there is nothing which is not subjected to the workings of these three gunas which are born of nature.
What are the three gunas and how to identify them in our own personality? Sattva guna instills knowledge and happiness, Rajo guna brings desire and passion and Tamo guna instils inattention, lethargy, and sleep. Sattva guna takes us to Yoga (knowledge of our own real identity), Rajo guna takes us to Bhoga (enjoyment of the world) and Tamo guna leads us to Moha (ignorance and delusion).
All the three gunas bind the mind and intelligence of man. Sattva guna binds us by causing sanga (delusional clinging) to happiness and knowledge. Rajo guna binds us through clinging to continuous activity and Tamo guna binds through inattention, lethargy and sleep. A seeker must persevere to overcome the binding effects of the three gunas.
The bondage of tamo guna can be overcome by cultivating more Rajo guna. The bondage of Rajo guna can be transcended by cultivation of more and more sattva guna. How to transcend the bondage of Sattva guna? Sattva guna bondage can be transcended by unswerving bhakti yoga. By surrender alone, the bondage of sattva guna can be overcome. A Gunatita (one who has transcended the binding effects of the 3 gunas) understands that it is all a play of nature and he attains a state of freedom and unaffectedness.
