Nutan Swamiji's orientation session, during the Bhagavad Gita Retreat conducted in Irvine, California during the USA Jnana Yajna 2024.

Location: Residence Inn Marriott Tustin Orange County, Newport Ave, Tustin, CA 92780
Date: 19 June 2024

In this orientation session of the Bhagavad Gita Retreat, Swamiji speaks about the purpose of the Retreat and what Bhagavad Gita Sadhana is. The Retreat is a period when the participants keep away from all worldly engagements. The Retreat helps the participants to absorb and retain the qualities and concepts presented, so that they can be easily applied in daily life.

Spirituality is an inner journey, search of a seeker. The Upanishadic Knowledge is usually imparted in quiet, peaceful surroundings. A seeker needs a calm mind, and peaceful surroundings to absorb and retain the knowledge. But the Bhagavad Gita knowledge (which is the Upanishadic knowledge) was given to Arjuna in the battlefield. If the knowledge of the inner truth can be given and imbibed in a war situation, can it not be imbibed in our lives—in the domestic, professional fronts?

Bhagavad Gita does not ask a seeker to abandon all work. It is asking seekers to transform all activities into spiritual sadhana. All actions can be transformed into Yoga by changing our mindset, our understanding. The seeker must change his mindset while engaging in activities. This change of mindset is what makes the activity a Yajna—an offering to the Lord.

Normally, all Yajnas are performed for the fulfilment of a specific desire. But in Bhagavad Gita, the whole concept is reversed. It says that everything becomes a Yajna, if it is done as an offering to the Lord. When we do things, being harmonious with nature, without desires, without selfishness, it becomes a Yajna. Swamiji says that the focus must be on changing the mindset and making all activities an offering to the Supreme.
