In this Satsang, beginning the 6th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Swamiji discusses Sannyasa (renunciation) and Yoga, in detail. Sri Krishna says that one who does all the necessary activities, without depending on the results of the action (without expecting sukha or duhkha from it), is a Sannyasi and a Yogi.

Bhagavad Gita repeatedly stresses on the performance of actions, not abandonment of actions. It urges seekers to perform all actions with a transformed mindset, whereby the action itself becomes a sadhana. Activity is indispensable in life. Nature (Prakriti) impels us to be active; nature does not allow a human to retreat from activity. One must continue to remain active, following the rhythm of nature.

Activity in the whole creation is a system, sequence set in motion by nature. Prakriti has three gunas-sattva, rajas and tamas and they bring about all activity. The knower of Truth understands that sattva, rajas and tamas (the constituents of nature) are generating all activities and interactions. They understand that it is all the play of the gunas and do all activities without any delusional clinging.

What is the Bhagavad Gita formula for performing all activities? All activities are to be performed well but one must mentally renounce all activities, as an offering to the Supreme. This is renunciation, whereby the mind and intelligence become spiritual. One must perform all activities, making the mind free of egoism and possessiveness. The Yogic enrichment must grace all activities, whereby the yoga of Samatva (evenness to success and failure) is practiced. Renunciation is a mento-intellectual embellishment and orientation where desires, attachment, expectations, possessiveness are relinquished.

Sri Krishna says that what is considered to be sannyasa (renunciation) is actually Yoga (samatva buddhi yoga). When the mind renounces the preference to success and abhorrence to failure, it is true renunciation. So, what must be renounced is the preference & prejudice and likes & dislikes. Without forsaking desires, likes & dislikes, one cannot become a Yogi. Anyone who wants to be a Yogi, he must remain active and practice evenness through all activities.
