In this Satsang, Swamiji continues to discuss ‘Upasana,’ where the mind holds on to a concept as a support. The purpose is to make the mind one-pointed, expansive, and universal and finally to get absorbed in the object of contemplation.
After explaining various Upasanas, Taittiriya Upanishad speaks about Pranava Upasana or Omkara Upasana. It says that the syllable ‘Om’ itself is Brahman; Om is everything in creation. Om is the consent given for all activities in the Yajna. With ‘Om’, the Samaveda is sung. ‘Om Shom’—with this, all shastras start the prayers. Whatever is offered in the Yajur Veda sacrifices, it is offered with the chanting of ‘Om’. The chief priest conveys or indicates his approval of all activities in the Yajna with ‘Om.’ ‘Om’ is chanted to signify the beginning of the fire sacrifice. With the chanting of ‘Om’ in the Yajna, the performer makes a Sankalpa that he will realize Brahman and he verily realizes it.
Many other Upanishads also extol Omkara Upasana. Kathopanishad says that the goal of spiritual pursuit is ‘Om’; It represents the supreme Truth. Omkara is the supreme refuge or support. By practicing Omkara Upasana, one comes to know the Truth and knowing the Truth a seeker becomes one with Brahman.
Speaking about Omkara Upasana, Mundaka Upanishad says that a seeker must take the bow, the mighty weapon of Upanishadic wisdom, and fix the arrow sharpened by constant Upasana on it. Having drawn it with the mind absorbed in the Supreme, he must hit that mark—the unchanging Brahman. The Pranava (OM) is the bow, the arrow is the Atman and Brahman is said to be its mark. That mark must be hit with great attention and one should become absorbed in Brahman.
Mandukya Upanishad is an exposition on the syllable ‘Om’. It says Om is everything; it is Akshara, or unchanging. The past, present and future—everything is Omkara alone. That which is transcending the past, present and future (transcending time) is also Omkara alone. In Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna assures us that whoever drops the body chanting the divine syllable ‘Om’, remembering the Supreme, will attain the supreme.
Swamiji will be discussing 'Voice of Upanishads'. The Global Satsang will be based on Taittiriya Upanishad. | Live Satsangs with Spiritual Masters on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 8 pm IST/10:30 am EDT/ 10:30 pm MST.
