In this Satsang, Swamiji emphasizes that purity and expansion of the mind are extremely important for self-realization. To this end, the scriptures repeatedly remind seekers that along with Sadhana, they must not neglect the study of the scriptures, understanding their meaning and embracing it in their own life.
Taittiriya Upanishad links all practices and disciplines to svaadhyaya (the study of scriptures which reveal the Truth) and pravachana (diving deep into the meaning and essence of scriptural statements and applying it in life). Along with the practice of truthfulness, austerity, sensory and mental discipline, svaadhyaya and pravachana must be practiced. A seeker must also not neglect it in household life--in procreation, receiving and attending to guests and being a good and noble human being.
What is the state of self-realization? This is described in the Upanishad, as a statement by Rishi Trishanku, who declares that he has gained the brilliance of knowledge and that he is the essence of creation. Identifying himself with the eternal self, he declares that he is unchanging, unaffected.
The next mantra of the Upanishad draws a picture of a Gurukula, where the teacher having imparted the knowledge of the Vedas, is giving his final instructions to the students who are leaving the Gurukula. As parting instructions, the students are given disciplines, codes of conduct to be followed in their life. These instructions are as relevant for a seeker today, as they were for the students in the Upanishadic era.
The teacher asks the students to live a righteous life, being harmonious with nature and practice truthfulness in words, speech, and actions. They must never be inattentive and neglect the words of the shastras. Having provided monetary assistance to the Guru, the student must take up the responsibility of continuing the lineage. Living a householder life, he must not neglect the practice of truth, dharma, earning wealth and prosperity, and most importantly he must not neglect svaadhyaya and pravachana.
