In this Satsang, Swamiji is discussing the 11 th Anuvaka of Taittiriya Upanishad, which is very relevant and important for a householder and a spiritual seeker. What does the 11 th Anuvaka speak about? After having studied in the Gurukula, the students are prepared to go out into the world, to pursue a fulfilling life. As a parting message, the teacher gives disciplines, codes of conduct, and instructions to be reflected upon and followed. The instructions may look simple, but when understood properly, they can transform the individual, as well as the society.
The first pithy instruction is: “Speak the truth’”. We will be able to speak the whole truth only when the mind is free of desires and expectations. ‘Truth’ means that there will not be any difference or clash between our inmost mindset, the thoughts, actions, and the words. Our behaviour will have to become open and transparent.
The Guru urges the shishyas to follow dharma in every facet of life. Dharma is the fundamental law of sustenance of nature, of life. If we live according to dharma, we will be in harmony with nature. By over-indulgence and by living unrighteously, we flout dharma and destroy our own life. The teacher urges the students to never be inattentive to svaadhyaya (shastric study). Beginning the life of a householder and earning wealth, the students are asked to fulfil the needs and requirements of the teacher and the gurukula also.
Living the householder life, they must live a life based on truth, righteousness and being anchored in their own real identity. They must never be negligent about understanding the essence of shastras and applying it in life. Having begun the householder life, they must work for the prosperity of the family, society, nation, and the globe. The students must also understand the importance of begetting good and worthy children and offering them to the society and nation. The householder must honour the Gods, his ancestors, his own parents, the teacher and the guests.
Swamiji urges the listeners to understand that the Upanishads, through these messages, are trying to connect us to the whole universe. They are trying to unify us through everything in the universe. One must be a human first. It is the human qualities which can make the human divine.
