In this Satsang, Swamiji continues to discuss the 11th Anuvaka, of Taittiriya Upanishad, where the Guru is giving parting instructions to the pupils leaving the Gurukula. He exhorts them to lead a life based on dharma and truth, never neglecting the study of scriptures, and applying the scriptural messages in their own life. The students are asked to follow whatever is good, virtuous, and auspicious.

What should be one’s attitude in gifting or offering to others? Every gift or offering must be given with shraddha (giving supreme value to it). A giver must give according to his capability and in accordance with the cause for which he is giving. The gift must be given with humility and sensitivity, taking care not to hurt or insult the receiver. The giver must have a full, wholesome, comprehensive knowledge of the situation, fully understanding the need of the receiver, usefulness of the gift, one’s own capability, the right time for giving etc.

Bhagavad Gita (17 th Chapter) says that Daana must be given with proper honour, respect and full attention. When a gift is given considering it to be an appropriate gift, and given at the right place, on the right occasion and to the right person, looking for no return favour, it is a saatvika gift. Anything that is given expecting some return, given for some selfish reason, in a constricted manner, is Rajasika daana. The gift that is given at the wrong place, at a wrong time, to the wrong people, not given with concern and kind words, in a contemptuous manner, is Tamasika daana.

The Guru asks the departing students to serve, honour and respect, wise and knowledgeable people. Whenever faced with any doubts or some dilemma, they must seek advice from the wise people. How to identify the wise people? Wise people are those who are well-versed in scriptures, have a discriminating intelligence, and are connected to the Truth. They are not only connected to the Truth, but they also practice the truth in their lives. They are given to truth, harmony and are merciful and kind. A seeker must emulate their action and behaviour.
