In this Satsang, Nutan Swamiji begins the second chapter of Taittiriya Upanishad, called ‘Brahmananda Valli’. It is meant for the seekers of Brahma Vidya, and it gives prominence to the Ananda aspect of Brahma Jnana (Supreme Knowledge).
The Guru-Shishya relationship is a unique one, where both are wholesomely dedicated and surrendered to Brahma Vidya. Without the combination of Guru and the shishya, Brahma Vidya would not have survived through the ages. The Guru should be anchored in Brahman and the pupil must be endowed with humility, faith and sincerity towards the teacher and the Supreme Truth.
The chapter begins with the shanti mantra prayer which is meant to be chanted by the Guru and the shishya together. They are praying so that the best communication of Brahma Vidya is possible. To whom is the prayer directed to? Although it is not mentioned, it is clear that it is to the all-pervading,
invisible, indescribable Consciousness. The prayer says:
May we both be protected. They are not praying merely for bodily protection, but for the protection of the awareness of the Supreme, in their being.
May we both enjoy together. May we find spiritual joy. They are praying that the awareness of the oneness must fill them both with joy and contentment.
May we do everything together with Veerya. Veerya is the power and spirit that fills us when we are anchored in the Truth. Guru is endowed with Veerya when he is surrendered to the Truth; the shishya has Veerya when he fulfils Guru’s wish or instructions; when he places service to the Guru above his own likes and dislikes.
May what we learn become Tejasvi (brilliant). May we live the knowledge.
May we never be intolerant or hateful of each other. Intolerance arises only when there is ego and expectation in the mind. Intolerance will not be there when both the Guru and shishya are fully surrendered to the cause of Brahman and are open to each other.
In conclusion, the Guru and Shishya pray that they should be protected from the three-fold sufferings—suffering caused by natural calamities, sufferings caused by other beings, and suffering caused by the mind and the intelligence.
