217 – How Supreme Devotion Transcends Liberation I Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

598 Views | 1 month ago

Talk given by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha ji during the 23rd Parama Tatwa Sameeksha Satram held at Sabhanikethan, Naimisharanyam, Parlikkad on 25 December 2024.

In this talk, Swamiji speaks about Supreme Devotion and how it transcends even Moksha or liberation. Liberation is attained when one comes to know one’s own real identity, which takes away all constrictions and bondage and one becomes universal.

What is Supreme devotion? It is said to be attained when one is completely surrendered to the Lord, keeping away one’s own desires, attractions, and repulsions. Srimad Bhagavatam says that when one leaves all desire-motivated actions and is completely surrendered to the Lord, having developed an interest in knowing the Lord, then God makes him fit for realizing his own immortality.

In Uddhava Gita, Sri Krishna says that the easiest way to grow intense devotion is to be in Satsanga (association with one who has identified with the universal Lord). People take up many devotional practices, but there is nothing more effective than Satsanga to bind the devotee to his Lord.

In supreme devotion, one completely identifies with the Lord. In such a state, there are no desires—not even the desire for liberation. One who has attained Para Bhakti does not want anything other than his beloved Lord. He is completely free of expectations and has equal vision. His ego is completely dissolved; his intelligence is free of all doubts and he is free of any sense of doership. Bhagavad Gita says that through Para Bhakti, the devotee comes to know the Self in essence and becomes identified with the Supreme.
