219 – What is the purpose of Meditation? | Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6 | Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

Swamiji begins the Satsang by recapitulating the verses discussed in the last Satsang, where Samatva (equal vision) is discussed. Samatva is a qualitative enrichment which every seeker must cultivate. When the mind interacts with the plurality of the world, it creates disturbance and agitations in the mind. Such a mind must be adorned with equal vision, by which it remains tranquil.

What is the mind? Mind is the source of all experiences. The entire world is nothing other than a display of our own mind. Normally, a non-integrated person perceives plurality and is deluded by it. He becomes agitated and starts dividing things into good and bad and it becomes rooted in his mind. So, a seeker must integrate his personality by integrating the senses with the mind, mind with the intelligence and intelligence with the ‘I’. In the entire spiritual pursuit, the focus is on the mind and intelligence alone.

In the sixth chapter, Sri Krishna discusses the process of meditation and the focus of meditation. Given to equal vision, a seeker should withdraw from all externality and dip into his own within. Sitting alone, restraining his mind and intelligence, he should keep his mind free of desires or expectation of any rewards.

What is the process of meditation? The Yogic practitioner must choose a secluded spot, sit on a comfortable, and stable Aasana (mat or seat), neither too high nor too low. Making the mind one-pointed and collected, restraining the mental, sensory, and intelligential activities, he must practice Yoga for purifying his being. Ensuring that the body, neck, and head are in a straight line, he must sit without any movement. He should focus the vision on the tip of the nose or on top of the nose and not look in any specific direction.
