In response to a query, Swamiji begins the talk by addressing the erroneous understanding about the concept of rebirth (Punar Janma) in the minds of people. He also discusses the Karma Theory, thereby dispelling many false notions ingrained in our minds.
Bhagavad Gita says that deluded people do not perceive the all-pervading, unchanging, eternal Self. But one with the eye of knowledge is able to perceive it. Striving seekers, by austerity and Sadhana, perceive the Supreme (the ‘I’) in their own within. But those who lack purity and discrimination fail to perceive the Self, even if they strive for it.
The Atma is present in every perception and is untouched, unaffected by anything. The Upanishads stress that it cannot be grasped by the senses, by any karma or by any austerity. One who has a discriminating intelligence (Viveka Buddhi), who is constantly connected to the Soul, who is pure, he attains the Supreme. By constant sadhana, the being gets purified and one is able to know the indivisible consciousness.
Progress in the spiritual path is had only by practicing Sadhana chatushtaya (Four-fold sadhana), dropping yearning for sensory enjoyments, increasing Viveka (discrimination) and by constant introspection. For one who practices this Jnana Tapas (knowledge austerity), the Atma reveals itself. Swamiji makes it clear that this path is not for those who are weak, and who chase after external wealth, power, and fame.
